How to choose which products appear in your store's recommendations

Open any recommendation section and go to its Products part. In a Complementary section your picks show first and AI fills the rest; in Related products, Related categories and Fixed products only what you add is shown. Each section keeps its own list, and you can import or export it as a CSV file.

Why choose the products yourself

Automatic and AI sections run on their own, and for most products that is enough. But you know things the data does not: which charger actually fits a laptop, which scarf matches this season's abaya, or which product you want to push during a campaign.

Choosing products yourself lets you put that knowledge on the page, while the rest of your catalog keeps working automatically.

Four ways to decide what shows

Each way suits a different job. The section's type decides which one you get when you open its Products part.

  • Picks in a Complementary section: choose products for a given product. They show first, and AI fills the remaining slots. A product with no picks is still covered by AI.
  • Related products: link a product to the products to show with it, such as other colours, sizes or models. Only your links show, and a product without links shows no section.
  • Related categories: link whole categories, so a product in one category shows products from another, for example from phones to accessories or from shoes to socks.
  • Fixed products: the same products for every shopper on every visit. They suit a home page promotion or cart add-ons like gift wrapping.

Each section keeps its own list

Picks and links belong to the section where you add them. Two Complementary sections, one on the product page and one in the cart, can show different products for the same item. A cosmetics store could show a matching lipstick under a foundation, and a makeup sponge in the cart.

For large catalogs, use Import CSV to add many links at once, and Export to download what you have, edit it in a spreadsheet and import it again.

Who sees it, appearance and placement

Who sees it limits a section to certain markets or countries; leave it empty to show it everywhere. On the product page, Best sellers, New arrivals, Trending and Most viewed can also show only products from the category of the product being viewed. If that category has too few, the section fills from the whole store.

Appearance sets the title position, scroll arrows on desktop and mobile, and an optional banner image shown above the section, beside the products or as the first slide. Placement on the page is automatic unless a developer attaches the section to a specific element.

How to set it up

  1. 1Open Recommendations and click the section you want to change.
  2. 2In Products, link a product, pick products, or add fixed products, depending on the section type. For Related categories, use Categories and link a category.
  3. 3To add many links at once, use Import CSV. Use Export to download the current list.
  4. 4Under Who sees it, choose markets or countries, or turn on Show products from the same category for a product page section.
  5. 5Adjust Appearance if needed, then click Save changes.

Common questions

Why is my Related products section not showing?

It shows only the links you add. Until a product has links, nothing appears on its page, and the Recommendations page lists the section under Need attention. The same applies to Related categories and Fixed products.

If I pick products for a Complementary section, does AI stop working?

No. Your picks show first and AI fills the remaining slots. Products you have not picked for keep their AI suggestions.

Can I show a section only to shoppers in one country?

Yes. Under Who sees it, select the markets or countries where the section should appear. Leave everything unselected to show it in all of them.

Do my links carry over to other sections?

No, each section keeps its own list. To reuse a list on another page, duplicate the section; the copy includes its products list.
